Discover the Line-Up with Clunk Magazine:Royel Otis

We’re teaming up with the good folks at CLUNK magazine again - champions of new music for fresh ears - to deep dive into some of the incredible acts that you can catch at Boardmasters 2024 this summer.🤘 Come with us as we talk to Australian indie legends Royel Otis…

For the past decade Australia has been one of the leading countries for emerging new talent.

Bands such as Amyl & The Sniffers, Lime Cordiale, and a whole heap more have been leading the charge from down under. Now, young guns Royel Otis are coming in HOT and with an already growing back catalogue of dreamy mellow guitar music. Recently, the band blew up on TikTok with their cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextar’s ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’, a moment that even took the band by surprise.

Now, we chat with the rising stars ahead of their debut Boardmasters performance this summer. The band talk through their creative process, new music, fan favourites and more…

Firstly, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us. how has the tour been going so far?

RM: The tour so far has been a huge learning experience trying to deal with the huge adrenaline buzzes and then silent hotels. Wouldn’t change it for the world!

When you covered Sophie Ellis-Bextor's 'Murder On The Dancefloor' did you know it was going to go as viral as it did?

RM: Honestly had the lowest expectations after doing the cover of ‘Murder On The Dance Floor.’  We were exhausted but maybe that made it work?!

Had you played that track before the live session and were you fans of it prior?

RM: We’ve always been fans of the track and of other Sophie Ellis Bexter tracks but had never played it before doing that session.

Your latest album 'Pratts & Pain' came out in February. Talk us through the creative process

RM: The creative process behind ‘Pratts & Pain’ was a lot more open and involved far more live jams compared to previous recordings. We try to make sure we have plenty of fun recording. So far, that’s exactly what we have done *knock on wood.*

Can we still expect a few fan favourites in your Boardmasters set?

OP: Definitely, a good mix.

It's your debut year at Boardmasters and in Cornwall. Are you excited to play?

OP: Cornwall looks very beautiful and we’ve just read it’s the most southern place in England. Also keen to try a Cornish pasty!

How do you get ready for a show? Any pre-show rituals?

OP: We like to play games normally involving throwing a lid into a cup from a few metres back.

Lastly, what's one thing from Australia you like to bring with you when you travel the world touring?

OP: Essential socks and jocks!
