Discover the line-up with Clunk Magazine: Interview with Divorce

We’ve teamed up with the good folks at CLUNK magazine - champions of new music for fresh ears - to deep dive into some of the amazing acts that you can catch at Boardmasters 2023 this summer. Come with us as we chat to Divorce...

Divorce came together at the beginning of 2021 and have seen an astronomical rise since. The band’s 2022 ‘Get Mean’ EP saw critical acclaim from tastemakers such as DIY, CLASH, and of course, CLUNK.

Their blend of alt-country and rock come together in beautiful unison, as does the vocal harmonies that are a constant presence throughout their music.

The band have already toured every corner of the country and recently played at The Great Escape. It’s safe to say that 2023 is going to be a busy year for the fledgling band…we’re here for the ride, and you should be too.

This will be the band’s debut Cornwall show so with that in mind we wanted to get to know more about Divorce…

Hey all. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! How has 2023 been for you so far?

Thanks for asking! It’s been an exciting start to the year. We’ve been in the studio lots working on more releases for this year and we’re super excited to have those out in the world.

You’ve had a busy year or two with shows across the country, playing The Great Escape, and of course, the release of your most recent EP 'Get Mean.’ Have you managed to process all of this yet?

It’s definitely all happened quicker than we’d expected, and at times it’s felt overwhelming but we feel lucky to have so many opportunities to connect with people live at the kind of shows we’ve all wanted to play for years.

Did you ever expect to have such a whirlwind of an experience and how does it feel?

I think after our first release we knew things were building quite quickly but we didn’t expect things to keep building in the way they have. We mostly just feel very lucky. It’s been pretty easy to keep our feet on the ground though. We’ve all been in music long enough to know that hype and opportunities come and go, so we’re just trying to enjoy being in this moment and focus on writing the best songs we can.

What can we expect from your Boardmasters debut?

Probably a lot of pyrotechnics. We’re currently trying to work out the logistics of transporting a 40-foot papier maché egg down the A30. You guys said we couldn’t build a real ice rink so we’re just trying to work within our means and I really think this could work…

Have you been to Cornwall before? What are you looking forward to most?

We’ve never been to Cornwall as a band so we’re pretty buzzed about it. I’m looking forward to a good cider or two (if I’m feeling extreme) on the beach and maybe some group paddling. Adam and Kasper are amazingly rapid swimmers so we like to race them against each other whenever we’re near a body of water. It gets a bit impractical when we’re on tour because the races take up a lot of time and energy but we just can’t get enough of how fast they are in the water.

Anyone at Boardmasters you are personally excited to see?

Very excited for Little Simz, Jockstrap, Squid and The Last Dinner Party!

And lastly, what are your 5 festival essentials?

Toothbrush, ice rink, sun hat, back-up sun hat, formal shoes.
