NEWQUAY CRIBBAR MURAL

The Boardmasters Foundation has funded a mural painted by artist Chris Dorning, breathing life into a building in the centre of Newquay, a stonesthrow from Fistral Beach.

‘It Stays With Us’ is a tribute to The Cribbar – Newquay’s big wave that breaks off Towan Headland, first ridden in 1966.

Artist Chris Dorning shares more: A heavy wave, that stays with you, a memory shared between those who have experienced the ride, preserving the space and maybe even baring the weight of the anxiety / excitement of the next ride.”

The latest mural in Newquay grew from a simple yet meaningful idea: to honor the legendary Cribbar wave and the vibrant surfing community of Newquay.

Boardmasters has been part of Fistral’s story since its inception – surfing since ’81. This passion for local surf history, combined with the Boardmasters Foundation’s desire to give back and support the culture and surrounding communities that are at the heart of our festival, inspired us to commission this piece. An ode to both the iconic big wave that has challenged surfers and captured imaginations since its first recorded ride in 1966, and to all those who’ve braved riding it in the years since.

Our goal was to give back to the local community and celebrate its rich surfing heritage with a piece that both compliments the wider MUQY project and breathes life into a building in the centre of Newquay, a stone’s throw from Fistral Beach.

To bring this vision to life, we collaborated with Slapdash Studio’s Jack Tierney, who brought artist Chris Dorning into the fold. Chris’ creative talent transformed the seed of this idea into the striking visual tribute you see now.

We’re proud to have contributed to celebrating Newquay’s surfing legacy, and we hope this piece inspires passersby for years to come.
